There are a great many beautiful and exotic locations in Sri Lanka that are best visited using the most ancient of all methods of transportation — your own

two feet. You cannot experience the sounds of a rippling stream in an otherwise silent canyon or know what the rustle of fall leaves really sound like

without the background noises of civilization.

It is truly mentally and emotionally healing to stand still and look at the world as our ancestors must have seen it — pure and unspoiled. It is exhilarating

to deeply inhale air that is scented by pine and honeysuckle (that didn’t originate in a spray can) rather than by exhaust fumes. There are sights and sounds

and smells that cannot be experienced while traveling down the road or flying high above the land in a jetliner.

You can get a lot of good walking exercise by visiting Hortan Planes in Sri Lanka, but you won’t get the spiritual healing that you can get by walking in the remote wilderness. Can you imagine silence? Probably not if you live in our modern, busy, and noisy world.

You can find hiking vacations in just about every part in Sri Lanka. You can see and experience the world as

it once was. You can visit the Sinharaja rain forest, or climb the Sri Pada (Adam’s peak) through the jungle. There are many other places in Matale area that are perfect for a hiking vacation.

You can find a hiking travel package in Sri Lanka that will fill your needs and coincide with your level of fitness. There are hiking tours that are relaxing and easy walks along the shores of a lake, exhilarating treks through the mountains and waterfalls, and everything in between.

You don’t have to go to Africa to visit a safari park. There are many safari parks in Sri Lanka for wild life enthusiasts.  Sri Lanka is one of the places you will find rare Black Panthers.

Here are few safari parks in Sri Lanka

Kumana  (Bird sanctuary)

Uda Walawe (elephants)

Yala  (Leopard, Bear, Crocodiles, rare sighting of Black Panthers)

Boondala (Bird sanctuary)

Minneriya (Mainly elephants)

Horton Planes (Leopard, Rain Deer, Birds and rare sighting of Black Panthers)

A vacation to a safari park is much like a trip to a zoo, except so much bigger and better. There are no cages. The animals live in natural habitats. The visitors can drive their own vehicles through the safari parks in Sri Lanka or take transportation provided by private tour operators. There are plenty pf operators.

The interaction between safari park visitors and the animals in the park can be up close and personal. Sometimes the animals seem to think that the visitors are there for them to inspect, and they will come right up to the vehicle for a closer inspection of the strange creatures (humans).

If you are lucky you will be the next person to see Black Panthers. The frequency of Black panther sighting has been increased recently. I have see few video footages from Yala and Horton Planes.

I have travelled to many places in Sri Lanka. That includes everything from travel destinations to hotels to restaurants to airlines. So, in the interest of providing information to those who haven’t travelled or as often in Sri Lanka, here is a list of 10 items that will be useful for your holiday in Sri Lanka.

1.  Wheeled luggage: This can be a suitcase, a duffle bag, or a backpack, but you need to have the option of wheeling it. You carry luggage only when it is necessary — carrying is not the first option. You can avoid muscle aches and pains as well as strained backs, and all of these can ruin a perfectly good vacation.

2.  Daypack: A daypack might not be as stylish as a tote, but it is a better option to carry maps, snacks, and other essentials because it distributes the weight across your back and shoulders while leaving your hands free.

3.  Comfortable Shoes and clothes: Forget style and ensemble coordination. When you travel take shoes that are comfortable to walk in and that won’t cause any foot pain. Also where light clothes that are suitable for warm and humid whether (cotton clothes are the best) unless you are planning to visit Hill Country. Average temperature in Sri Lanka is 30C throughout the year.

4.  Medications and Personal Care Items: Don’t forget to pack enough medications for twice the length of time that you plan to be gone. “Stuff” happens.

5.  Local currency and Money Belt: Pickpockets are deft and quick, and a money belt is the safest and surest way to travel with your money, passport, and other valuables. Also carry local currency (Rupees) as most of the small shops in Sri Lanka do not accept credit cards.

6.  Rain Gear: Sri Lanka is a tropical country. The sun doesn’t always shine. Sometimes it rains, and you need to be prepared for inclement weather.

7.  Travel Alarm: You don’t want to miss flights.

8.  Voltage Converter and Plug Adapters: Electricity is 230v in Sri Lanka. If you are planning to use any non 230v electrical equipments then this is a must.

9.  Maps and Guidebooks: Your hotel or the travel agent may provide these items. However, get maps and guidebooks for the area you plan to visit before you go. They aren’t always available.

10.  Backup Documents: Take at least two copies of every important document — passports, tickets, birth certificates, etc. — with you and leave one copy with a close friend or relative.
