I have travelled to many places in Sri Lanka. That includes everything from travel destinations to hotels to restaurants to airlines. So, in the interest of providing information to those who haven’t travelled or as often in Sri Lanka, here is a list of 10 items that will be useful for your holiday in Sri Lanka.
1. Wheeled luggage: This can be a suitcase, a duffle bag, or a backpack, but you need to have the option of wheeling it. You carry luggage only when it is necessary — carrying is not the first option. You can avoid muscle aches and pains as well as strained backs, and all of these can ruin a perfectly good vacation.
2. Daypack: A daypack might not be as stylish as a tote, but it is a better option to carry maps, snacks, and other essentials because it distributes the weight across your back and shoulders while leaving your hands free.
3. Comfortable Shoes and clothes: Forget style and ensemble coordination. When you travel take shoes that are comfortable to walk in and that won’t cause any foot pain. Also where light clothes that are suitable for warm and humid whether (cotton clothes are the best) unless you are planning to visit Hill Country. Average temperature in Sri Lanka is 30C throughout the year.
4. Medications and Personal Care Items: Don’t forget to pack enough medications for twice the length of time that you plan to be gone. “Stuff” happens.
5. Local currency and Money Belt: Pickpockets are deft and quick, and a money belt is the safest and surest way to travel with your money, passport, and other valuables. Also carry local currency (Rupees) as most of the small shops in Sri Lanka do not accept credit cards.
6. Rain Gear: Sri Lanka is a tropical country. The sun doesn’t always shine. Sometimes it rains, and you need to be prepared for inclement weather.
7. Travel Alarm: You don’t want to miss flights.
8. Voltage Converter and Plug Adapters: Electricity is 230v in Sri Lanka. If you are planning to use any non 230v electrical equipments then this is a must.
9. Maps and Guidebooks: Your hotel or the travel agent may provide these items. However, get maps and guidebooks for the area you plan to visit before you go. They aren’t always available.
10. Backup Documents: Take at least two copies of every important document — passports, tickets, birth certificates, etc. — with you and leave one copy with a close friend or relative.
